How to Create an Exit Intent Pop-Up

Learn how to create and implement an exit intent pop-up to re-engage visitors before they leave your website.

Updated over a week ago

An exit intent pop-up is a powerful way to capture the attention of visitors who are about to leave your website. By triggering a message, special offer, or lead capture form at the right moment, you can increase conversions and retain more visitors.

Step 1: Design Your Exit Intent Pop-Up

Start by designing your pop-up in the editor.

  • Use text, images, buttons, and animations to make it eye-catching.

  • Add custom HTML if you want advanced functionality—such as embedding a lead form or adding interactive elements.

  • Keep the design focused on a clear call-to-action (CTA).

Tip: Short, value-driven messages work best for exit intent pop-ups.

Step 2: Set the Embed Code to Trigger on Exit Intent

Once your pop-up design is ready:

  1. Click View on your design.

  2. Go to Embed and open the dropdown menu.

  3. Choose one of the additional embed options and click Edit.

  4. Select On Exit Intent from the trigger settings.

  5. Click Done and copy the newly generated embed code.

This code is now configured to display the pop-up when a visitor moves their cursor toward closing the tab or navigating away.

Step 3: Add the Embed Code to Your Website

There are several ways to implement your exit intent pop-up:

  • CMS Websites (e.g., WordPress)

Paste the embed code into a custom HTML widget or block.

  • Static or Custom-Built Websites

Ask your developer to insert the embed code directly into the site’s HTML source.

  • Using Google Tag Manager

Create a new custom HTML tag in Google Tag Manager and paste the embed code there. This is a great option if you want to manage pop-ups without editing your site code.

Important Notes

  • This is a premium feature and is not available on free plans.

  • Exit intent pop-ups are most effective when they offer clear value—like discounts, free downloads, or limited-time offers.
