PSD Import Requirements and Limitations

Prepare your Photoshop files for Bannersnack. Learn PSD import requirements, optimization tips, and limitations for layers, fonts, text, and colors to ensure the best results.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

When uploading Photoshop (PSD) files into Bannersnack, there are two things you need to know:

  1. Basic requirements and optimizations to prepare your files correctly.

  2. Limitations to be aware of when importing, since not all Photoshop features are supported.

Basic Requirements & Optimizations

Area

Best Practice

Notes / Recommendation

File size & artboard

Max file size: 100 MB
Max artboard size: 3000 × 3000 px

Scale or split PSDs if they exceed these limits.

Export note

PSD files can be imported into Bannersnack but cannot be exported back out

Keep a working copy in Photoshop for future edits.

Layout setup

Use a square layout (1:1 aspect ratio) when possible

Square layouts are easier to adapt to multiple ad formats.

Design size

Match your PSD size to the largest ad size you plan to create

Oversized files may slow performance without adding value.

Hidden layers

Remove hidden layers before import

Bannersnack ignores hidden layers.

Organizing layers

Group related layers (e.g., text, buttons, logos)

Merge and rasterize groups that don’t need editing

Crop oversized layers beyond canvas

Reduces file size and ensures better resize logic.

Fonts

Upload any custom fonts to Bannersnack before import

Missing fonts trigger warnings during import.

Limitations

Area

Limitation

Notes / Workarounds

Layer effects & styling

Effects (e.g., shadows, glows) must be rasterized before import

Photoshop supports live effects, but rasterizing preserves them in Bannersnack.

Blending & transparency

Blend modes (e.g., Multiply, Overlay) are not supported

Flatten, merge or raserize layers with blending.

Rotation

Only text layers retain rotation

Other rotated layers revert to default orientation.

Text options

Auto leading, horizontal/vertical scaling, and tight letter spacing (tracking) are not supported

Adjust text in Photoshop before import.

Missing fonts

A yellow triangle signals a missing font in Bannersnack

Upload the font prior to importing your PSD.

Graphics & vector assets

SVGs convert to PNGs
Color overlays not recognized

Rasterize SVG layers before import.

Color & bit depth

Only 8-bit color mode is supported
→ Photoshop: Image → Mode → 8 Bits/Channel

Convert PSDs before upload.

Color profiles

Use sRGB for consistency
→ Photoshop: Edit → Convert to Profile → sRGB

Other profiles may cause color shifts.

Note: Most of these limitations are related to Bannersnack’s import process, not Photoshop itself. Always keep your original PSD in Photoshop for full editing capability and work on a duplicate.
